Daniela Mercury is an effervescent song stylist whose full bodied voice powers both hip-shaking, anthemic tunes and poignant romantic narratives with unwavering conviction and passion. A larger-than-life performer, Mercury possesses a magnetic stage personality that never fails to enrapture and fascinate concert-goers"
-- John Lanner, Billboard Magazine

Finally, one of Brazil’s hottest young performers makes her California debut as part of this year’s U.S. Tour.  Daniela Mercury’s  appearance in 1997 at New York’s Lincoln Center, transformed the normally staid hall into an ecstasy of Carnaval, according to Marty Lipp in Beat magazine.  This petite but energetic star burst onto the music scene in the early 1990’s in Brazil’s northeast city of Salvador, Bahia, and was quickly dubbed by the press as the “Queen of Axé (a-SHAY; positive energy) Music”.

Daniela, as she is known throughout Brazil, brings her poly-rhythmic, 10-piece band of musicians to dance and party non-stop with the infectious music of her homeland -- mixing the rhythms of afro-reggae, pop, rock, samba, and the distinctive percussive beat of Afro-Bahian drumming. She grew up listening to Gilberto Gil , Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa during the 1970’s. Wishing to become a professional dancer, Daniela quickly discovered her own special vocal quality, soon joining the trios electricos, the small bands that play atop flatbed sound-trucks that rock the streets of Salvador during Carnaval. She quickly became popular both in Brazil and internationally.  Recently, she performed in Italy with Caetano Veloso before a crowd of 30,000.  She just released her 9th CD, “Sol da Liberdade” (Freedom's Sun), bringing into focus her concern and involvement in projects of social merit. To cap her international success, Daniela has recently become Brazil’s musical ambassador to UNESCO.

The show opens with Brazilian percussionist Meia Noite and singer Josias dos Santos -- guaranteed to jump-start the evening into a party mood with a brand of sensual dance music called pagode.  Meia Noite also hails from Salvador, has performed with Daniela, and most recently with Sergio Mendes , Olodum and Ricky Martin

We invite everyone to join in an evening of explosive music, hot dance rhythms, and tropical energy as Daniela Mercury brings Brazil to the Bay Area!
